Seppuwa Falls Church of Christ’s Children hosts MMA Men’s retreat
February 28, 2011
Seppuwa Falls Church of Christ’s Children have chosen a different venue for their annual Christian Male retreat, they are doing it in the octagon.
“It is not a question of whether you are a lover or a fighter anymore, the modern Christian man needs to be both.” said organizer Jerimiah Shweezy
The program is the result of a partnership between the Arm Bar a local MMA themed sports bar owned by a Church member, Jeff Spolstra.
Spolstra explained his decision, “It is a match made in Heaven it came in a vision.” He added, “I was training and was put in a sleeper hold. Right before I lost consciousness I was told by the lord that I should use MMA in a way to build better men.
When you enter a session there is an eery calm in the air. The session starts with stoic faces but ends with several of these warriors hugging each other and crying.
They air out grievances one another don’t hold back. Stan Plotkin, a local MMA fighter broke down in tears as he told the others what bothers him, “You know I am very self conscious about my cauliflower ears and I don’t like how Gerald enjoys making me feel small, I am a Man.”
Controversy
This retreat has been two years in the making a lot of it depending on the completion of the new Seppuwa Falls Church of Christ’s children Mega-Church which has recently opened its doors.
“The church made sure that their would be a space in the ministries to practice Mixed Martial Arts Mr. Spolstra was kind enough to work as an adviser in our Ministry recreation center.” Mr. Shweezy said.
Some in the community and even within the church believe that the actions of the church are unethical. One church member who did not want to be name said, ‘We have a bar owner running a male retreat in the church where people engage in violence. Do I need to go further than that?”
